History of religion collection

The collection consists of over 600 objects describing the activities of religious denominations in Latvia from the 17th century to the second half of the 20th century.

The collection includes ceremonial and liturgical items of Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, Old Believer and Judaism denominations, as well as religious literature, periodicals and photographs.

Sacred art is represented by Orthodox and Old Believer icons. The 1886 Torah from the Cēsis Society for the Reading of Psalms is noteworthy in the context of the history of Judaism. Among other documents, the collection includes also reports and correspondence of the pastors of the Riga Eparchy Orthodox churches with the Riga District bishop’s assistants from 1850 to 1862.
