The LNMH offers several services at Riga Castle: museum lessons, guided tours, rental of travelling exhibitions, and venue space rental. Apply at +371 67221357 or info@lnvm.gov.lv, specifying the chosen time, topic, number of participants, space and other information.

Guided tours

The Latvian National Museum of History offers a new, modern exhibition on Latvian history “Streaming Time” and also the exhibition “Livonian Castles” and the restored rooms of the castle. These spaces have preserved their original medieval appearance while featuring architectural and interior elements from various later periods. After first phases of the reconstruction project, 4,400 square metres of the castle are open to the public: the refectory (dining hall), the chapel, the four-storey high Lead Tower.

Guided tour for groups of up to 10 people (up to 90 minutes)
30 EUR + entrance ticket for each participant.

Museum lessons

Several museum lessons take place at Riga Castle – “Riga Castle. Eras and Inhabitants” and “Get to Know Riga Castle”. Other lessons take place in the “Explorer’s Attic”: “How Did the Ancients Live?”, “Suitcase of the Ages”, “My Latvia”, “Latvia in the 20th Century” and “Timeline of Latvia”.

Museum lessons are available in the exhibitions “Streaming Time” and “Livonian Castles”.

Streaming Time

Grade 1–12

The lesson takes place in the museum’s new exhibition on Latvian history “Streaming Time.” In this exhibition, historical artifacts and engaging digital content, combined in a unique design, tell the story of the Latvian land and its people from the earliest times to the present day. The passage of time is depicted through people’s belonging to larger communities—families, social classes, congregations, associations, or movements and political parties—leading up to the present day, when we are experiencing new forms of cooperation and shared goals. The lesson also explores the history of Latvia, highlighting the most significant events and changes.

Life in Livonian Castles

Grade 1–12

The lesson takes place in the museum’s new exhibition “Livonian Castles,” in the vaulted cellars of Riga Castle, built in the 14th century revealing castles not only as military structures but also as vibrant and dynamic spaces of medieval society.

! The exhibition is not accessible by elevator. It is not suitable for people in wheelchairs.

Get to know Riga Castle

Grade 1–12

In the lesson, schoolchildren get to know Riga Castle – one of the best-preserved castles of the Teutonic Order in the Baltic Sea region with more than 500 years of history. The recently restored Riga Castle is not only an excellent monument of architecture and art, but also a witness to historical events – important decisions for Latvia were made in this building by the rulers of different times.

Riga Castle. Eras and Inhabitants

Grades 7–12

The lesson, dedicated to exploring Riga Castle, allows schoolchildren to interactively learn about the restored premises and history of the castle by taking on the role of the castle’s inhabitants from different eras.

Suitcase of the Ages

Grade 1–9

The lesson invites you to travel through the historical periods of Latvia, studying objects and trying to understand what has remained from previous centuries and how each period has shaped us. This is a great opportunity for everyone to see history as a living and exciting process in which we are also involved.

Latvia in the 20th Century

Grade 9–12

This lesson aims to strengthen pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the 20th century Latvian historical events.

My Latvia

Grade 1–9

The lesson promotes understanding of the circumstances and processes sourounding the formation of the Latvian state, strengthens the idea of its value.

How did the Ancients Live?

Grade 5–9

In the lesson pupils increase their knowledge of ancient Latvian history by learning about various archaeological objects – weapons, tools, household items, ceramics, jewellery, and reconstructed clothing – and strengthen their skills to identify and describe various historical sources.

Timeline of Latvia

Grade 9–12

This lesson aims to introduce participants to how people lived in the territory of Latvia from the Stone Age to the present day, teaching them to recognise the characteristics of different time periods.

Travelling exhibitions

The museum offers travelling exhibitions for schools (new reservations temporarily unavailable), museums, libraries and other cultural venues. The exhibitions are large informative stands, viewable from both sides, with a wealth of illustrative material and textual information.

The Institution of the President of Latvia

This exhibition is dedicated to the Presidents of Latvia from 1922 to 1940 and from 1993 to 2019. Public officials’ work in different periods of history is outlined through photographs and descriptions.

On the Way to Freedom of Latvia

This exhibition is dedicated to a short but very important period in Latvian history – the Third Awakening, which led to the restoration of Latvia’s independence.

The Baltic Way of Freedom

This exhibition is dedicated to the 1989 Baltic Way demonstration, with a broader historical retrospective on the consequences of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and its secret protocols in the history of Eastern Europe in the 20th century, as well as the cooperation between the Baltic States.

Mittens, Gloves…

236 photographs of gloves and mittens provide a snapshot of the LNMH collection and introduce the 19th and 20th century knitting tradition of Latvia.

Me, You, Us in Democracy. Public Participation in Democratic Latvia (1918–1990–Present)

This exhibition offers a look at democracy through three essential elements – social and civic participation, political participation, and equality. It emphasises the message that democracy is a model of governance that gives every individual a wide range of choices and opportunities for participation.

Space rental

In the Riga Castle (Pils laukums 3) it is possible to rent recently restored historical premises: refectory (dining hall), conference hall, small conference hall and event hall.
