Get to Know Riga Castle
Target audience: Grade 1–12
In the lesson, schoolchildren get to know Riga Castle – one of the best –preserved castles of the Teutonic Order in the Baltic Sea region with more than 500 years of history. The recently restored Riga Castle is not only an excellent monument of architecture and art, but also a witness to historical events – important decisions for Latvia were made in this building by the rulers of different times.
In the course of the lesson, together with the museum educator, the schoolchildren get to know the renovated premises of the Riga Castle (16th century vaults, columns, ceiling and wall paintings, etc. architectural and artistic elements), learn to see the evidence of different eras, get to know and appreciate the work of architects and restorers and understand the role of the castle and its inhabitants in different periods of history, including nowadays. By learning about the rich history of the castle, students simultaneously get an idea of the most important events in the history of Latvia.
