A Journey Through Latvian History (available from year 2025)
Target audience: Grade 1–4
The lesson aims to introduce participants to how people lived in the territory of Latvia from the Stone Age to the present day, teaching them to recognise the characteristics of different time periods.
Procedure: the lesson takes place using Explorer’s Cabinets in the learning room of the Riga Castle. The pupils perform various tasks as they travel through time and explore many different objects in the Explorer’s Cabinets. Working in groups, they solve tasks and find answers about ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary times, and then work together to identify the commonalities and differences between the different historical periods. Finally, the pupils create a timeline using objects from different historical periods. By working together, pupils find it easier to understand how historical periods succeed each other. Working in groups develops the ability to express and listen to others’ points of view, thus fostering pupils’ skills of cooperation and participation.
