Chants by Schola Sancti Meinardi of the Canonical Hours of the Teutonic Order

Chants by Schola Sancti Meinardi of the Canonical Hours of the Teutonic Order

The series of events at Riga Castle will continue on 25 January with the singing of the canonical hours of the Teutonic Order by the Schola Sancti Meinardi ensemble.

The collaboration between the Latvian National Museum of History and Schola Sancti Meinardi began last year when the museum’s researchers worked on the “Livonian Castles” exhibition and invited Gregorian chant practitioners to create the atmosphere and feel of a Livonian castle chapel in audio format. While this and other new exhibitions at the Museum are being developed, and while the restored chapel of Riga Castle is not filled with stands and objects, the ensemble Schola Sancti Meinardi invites you to experience the chanting of the medieval canonical hours in the flesh, and in an authentic setting. The chants will be accompanied by extended commentaries and explanations of their place in the liturgy and prayers of the Church.

Schola Sancti Meinardi was founded in 2009 when a group of church music enthusiasts, led by Andris Amolinis and Jānis Kurševs, decided to join forces to bring the Gregorian chants, which according to the Church’s own normative documents are an integral part of the Roman Rite, into Roman Catholic worship practice. The ensemble bears the name of the first Bishop of Livonia, who brought Gregorian chant to Latvia along with the Roman Rite.

The singing will begin in the Riga Castle Chapel on 25 January at 16:00, venue – Pils laukums 3 (entrance from Daugavas gāte), entrance fee – 12 euros.

Please book by +37167221357 or e-mail info@lnvm.gov.lv as there is a limited number of seats.
