Museum collection
The LNMH holds a collection of national importance: about 1,000,000 items that comprehensively reflect the history of Latvia and its inhabitants and represent Latvia and its people on the world’s cultural heritage stage. By documenting and preserving the history of an object’s origin and use the Museum preserves not only the item’s physical identity but also an essential part of our historical memory.
The Museum’s diverse collection allows for the creation of a core exhibition that reveals the bigger picture of Latvian history, enables a diverse range of exhibitions and creates ample opportunities for communication with the public.
The museum holds many unique collections. Not only Latvian researchers and enthusiasts but also foreign archaeologists, numismatists, ethnographers and historians work with the museum’s items.
The collection is decentralised and is held within the Medieval, Modern and Contemporary History Division, the Dauderi Division, the Popular Front Museum Division, the Archaeology Department, the Ethnography Division and the Numismatics Division.
The museum’s versatile collection allows to create exhibition that reveals the overall picture of Latvian history, gives the opportunity to implement a diverse offer of exhibitions and creates ample opportunities for communication with the public.
