The LNMH at Riga Castle partially closed to visitors during exhibition construction

From 15 September  the museum at Riga Castle will be closed to visitors, but school groups can participate in educational lessons held at “Explorer’s Attic”  to learn about Latvian history, provided they register in advance (more information about the offer for schools is available here). The museum also continues to organize individual events in some of the castle rooms not related to the exhibition.

You can get a feeling of the museum’s rooms at Riga Castle by taking the newly created 360° virtual tour (https://lnvm.gov.lv/en/riga-castle/360%e2%81%b0-virtual-tour/#e). It captures the architecture of the reconstructed rooms of the castle before the exhibition was built, allowing researchers and those who are interested  to view them even after the museum stands and display cases have been installed. It is also possible to use the LNMH audio guide, which is available in six languages from anywhere in the world via an internet connection (https://app.lnvm.lv/).

The exhibition “Streaming the Time” will be the first of the LNMH’s newly created exhibitions after its return to its historic home at Riga Castle. It will be located in a 620 square metre space and will tell the story of the land of Latvia and its inhabitants throughout history, from the earliest times to the present day. The passage of time in the exhibition is viewed through the lens of people’s belonging to a particular group (townspeople, ethnic and religious communities, social classes, citizens, etc.), emphasizing the “we” characteristic of nine eras and the cooperation between different groups.

Next year, the museum premises at Riga Castle will also host the exhibition “Livonian Castles”, which will eventually be supplemented by the exhibitions “History of the Riga Castle” and “Sacral Art”.

The companies SOLAVI and  AD PRODUCTION, which won the tender for the production and installation of the new exhibition “Streaming the Time”, have committed to completing the work within 31 weeks of commencement.

The Latvian National Museum of History  hopes that the public will understand the need for temporary restrictions at Riga Castle in the fall and winter, and in the spring, it will invite visitors to explore and appreciate the new exhibition there—Latvian history from a 21st-century perspective. At the same time, the museum invites you to explore Latvian history at other LNMH locations: Dauderi and Popular Front Museum, or digitally.

Information about the museum can be found on the website lnvm.gov.lv. You can also find out about current events at the museum in Riga Castle by following the LNMH pages on social networks Facebook, Instagram, X (@LNVMuzejs, @LNVMdauderi, @LNVMTautasfrontesmuzejs, @frontes_muzejs). A wide range of materials on the history of Riga Castle and Latvia (including museum publications and materials for teaching in schools) can be found on the virtual resource website eMuzejs (https://emuzejs.lnvm.lv/).
