Archaeological research at Riga Castle

Since February 2025, archaeological excavations have been carried out in the vicinity of Riga Castle in connection with the construction of a rainwater drainage system. However, archaeological monitoring in the construction zone revealed that the excavation works needed to be suspended – at a depth of about two metres below the modern ground level, an intact cultural layer was revealed, consisting of dark earth with wood remains, animal bones and shards of pottery.
