From 17 June a new exhibition titled “Livonian Castles” is open to visitors in the vaulted cellars of Riga Castle. It is the next in a series of new exhibitions being created at the museum’s historical homeplace and tells the story of the Livonian period (13th–16th centuries) and the castles built during this time, revealing one of the most significant layers of Latvia’s medieval cultural and historical heritage.
Over the centuries, the stone castles of Livonia have left their mark on our cultural environment, as many towns developed around them. The network of castles, monasteries and churches created a new cultural landscape in Livonia. Over the course of three and a half centuries, approximately 150 stone castles were constructed in Livonia. Of these, about one-tenth has survived to the present day, either partially preserved or rebuilt.
