Lost and Found

Riga Castle is one of the most widely described and studied architectural monuments, depicted in many plans, drawings, articles and books. But the castle still holds mysteries: there is much unknown about its daily life and inhabitants, as well as its interior design and details of the construction history.

Archaeological and architectural research, as well as the reconstruction process, have provided new answers to the researchers’ questions. The renovation has uncovered that which had been invisible for decades and centuries: lost, discarded, hidden, or deliberately preserved for future generations.

In the pop up exhibition “Lost and Found” we invite to have a look at the objects found during the archaeological research and reconstruction of the castle – both while the recent reconstruction of the south wing of the castle, and during previous research work, which has been particularly intensive since the 1990s.

The finds are displayed in various rooms of the castle; the items carefully selected from the collection of several thousand objects are diverse in form and chronological period. Among the items are 14^th–16^th-century building parts and artefacts, including knives, thimbles, scissors, weapon parts, as well as messages for future generations left by the 20^th-century builders.

The pop up exhibition will be on display until early 2025 when the installation of the new exhibitions will commence.
