From 7 November at Dauderi a new exhibition of ceramics by Anda Lase and paintings by Māra Alena “Between Heaven and Earth” (in Latvian “Starp debesīm un zemi”) is on display.
Some of Māra Alena’s paintings were created quite recently during an outdoor art workshop in Italy, and they will be on display to the public for the first time. In her works, the artist celebrates light and the sun, depicting the interplay of shadows and half-shadows, and a yearning for the sky. Whether it is the light from the garden of her home in Zvejniekciems or the white southern light—her art is imbued with a zest for life and a sense of lightness.
Ceramicist Anda Lase is drawn to the elements of the earth and all that they encompass—aspects that are not always immediately apparent in everyday life. The exhibition will feature works created using the special raku technique—a traditional Japanese method of firing clay. This method is based on a rapid change in temperature and the removal of the ceramic pieces from the kiln while it is still burning, rather than after the kiln has cooled, as is traditionally done in Latvia. In this dynamic and experimental process, unpredictable visual effects emerge.
The contrasting perspectives of the two artists also inspired the exhibition’s title.
The exhibition will be opened till 3 January.
