From 15 September the museum at Riga Castle is open only for school groups

Starting from 15 September 2025 the Latvian National  Museum of History at Riga Castle will begin construction of its exhibition, so it will be closed to individual visitors until spring 2026. Until the end of this year, the museum will host educational lessons for school groups and several events, but with a new exhibition  the museum will reopen next spring.

On 4 August  an agreement was signed at Riga Castle with the companies LLC SOLAVI and LLC AD PRODUCTION, which won the procurement for the production and installation of the exhibition “Straumējot laiku” (Streaming Time). The contract stipulates that the construction of the exhibition will be completed 31 week after the signing of the contract. In order to ensure the smooth installation of the exhibition, it has been decided to close Riga Castle to visitors.

The exhibition “Streaming Time” will be the first of the Museum’s newly created exhibitions after its return to its historic home in Riga Castle. It will be located in a 620 square metre space and will tell the story of the land and people of Latvia throughout history, from the earliest times to the present day. The flow of time in the exhibition is viewed through a person’s belonging to a particular group of people (townspeople, ethnic and religious communities, social classes, citizens of the state, etc.), emphasizing the “we” characteristic of nine eras and the mutual cooperation between different groups.

Soon, the Riga Castle premises will also be filled with the exhibition “Livonian Castles”, which is currently in preparation, followed by the exhibitions “History of the Riga Castle” and “Sacral Art”.

Until 15 September 2025 the museum will host events for various audiences: guided tours led by specialists, classes for families with children, and tours for seniors (for more information, visit https://lnvm.gov.lv/en/events/).

While the castle is closed to visitors, until the end of 2025, the museum will offer separate events on Lāčplēsis Day (11 November) and Independence Day of the Republic of Latvia (18 November), concerts of various genres.

Meanwhile, the museum’s  classroom “Explorer’s Attic” will continue its work, offering groups of students of all ages seven museum lessons on Latvian history and Riga Castle. More information can be found here: https://lnvm.gov.lv/en/riga-castle/for-schools/#e.

The LNMH at Riga Castle hopes that the public will understand the need for temporary restrictions in autumn and winter, and in spring it will invite visitors to discover and appreciate the new exhibition on Latvian history.
